Product Description

Botanical name: Matricaria recutita

Other names: Chamomile, Camomilla, Camomille Allemande, True Chamomile

Family: Asteraceae

Distribution: All temperate regions

Its name comes from the Greek words “Kamaï” and “melon”, meaning “earth apple”, and becomes “manzanilla” in Spanish; meaning “small apple” evoking its sweet apple smell.

The Egyptians were venerating Chamomile and dedicating it to Ra, Sun God. They were using it against Malaria. The Romans, who introduced it in Nordic countries, were calling it “healer’s plant”.

The name “Matricaria” is due to its invigorating effects upon the matrix: for millenia this flower was used to relieve menstrual pain and uterus infection. It’s been used to relieve a variety of ailments such as fever, jaundice, diarrhea, headaches and to heal all illnesses “under the skull”.

The Germans are the greatest consumer of chamomile; they call it “alles zutraut”, meaning “The one who can do everything”. The great American herbalist John Christopher and many other specialists say that Chamomile is one of the most precious medicinal herbs.

Chamomile is well known for its relaxing effects on the body and invigorating effects on the mind.
The traditional use of chamomile tea is to induce a deep sleep, an effect confirmed in a study of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. Chamomile stops spasms in the smooth muscles lining the stomach and intestines, and contains chemicals that are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic. One hint for best results: Always brew chamomile tea in a closed container, especially if you live at a high altitude.
